Not Talking

By Mike Bartlett

Paperback £11.99

  • Imison Award for audio drama - 2006
  • Tinniswood Award for audio drama - 2006

Lucy knows James has avoided the battle. Mark knows Amanda has fought for her life. But speaking the truth could bring everything crashing down.

What happens if we live a life of not talking?

Olivier award-winning writer Mike Bartlett's gripping and lyrical first play Not Talking unlocks a culture of silence and gives voice to the human casualties when things are easier done than said.

It was first broadcast as a radio play on BBC Radio 3 in March 2006, produced by Claire Grove and directed by Steven Canny, winning both the Imison and Tinniswood Awards for audio drama.

This edition was published by Methuen Drama, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, to coincide with a new stage production at the Arcola Theatre, London, in April 2018, and features an introduction by the author.

'If I don't want to tell anyone, it's up to me, right?'

Press Quotes

'A remarkable first work – four-handed drama that's compelling and compassionate from first to last... The hallmarks of Bartlett's writing for stage and screen are discernible. Skilful, subtle dialogue. Fully realised characters. Fathoms-deep emotional intelligence. Difficult topics handled deftly'
